Whimsical and melancholy, believable and not, The Snow Child is an honest exploration of the weight of grief and the saving grace of love. Welcome to the first monthly Read-along with Rosie of 2013. She hunts with a red fox at her side, skims lightly across the snow, and somehow survives alone in the Alaskan wilderness. One winter's day, after the first snow fall, the couple - having been inspired by the children of the land playing outside and building a snowman - decided to go out and build a snow child of their own. Even though the script was fully wrote by ourselves we had much influence over the novelist and journalist, Angela Carter. This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods. One of my favourite fairytales when I was little was The Snow Maiden. The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey Headline Review (Aug 2012) | Paperback, 438 pages. The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey caught my attention recently while looking for a new book to read against the cold of winter. The spark has gone out of their marriage and their lives. The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey tells the story of Mabel and Jack, a couple who live on the edge of the Alaskan wilderness. In the version I read, an elderly childless couple build a little girl out of snow, who miraculously turns into a real girl. I hope that some of you were able to grab a copy of 'The Snow Child' by Eowyn Ivey and that you found it a good read. I've seen this book listed as an example of Magical Realism, and as that is a genre that really doesn't resonate with me, I think that it might miss the mark with The Snow Child.
